Our history

Manchester Internships was established in 2008 by the organisations sponsoring Manchester's seven new innovative Academies.

The sponsors passionately believe all young people can benefit from opportunities to apply classroom based learning to the world of employment, via exciting, relevant and valuable work-based learning opportunities.  Initially created to support the work-based learning requirement of the 14-19 diplomas, Manchester Internships was extended to include all young people aged 17+ studying a Level 3 qualification at a Manchester-based school or college.

The pilot

The two year pilot, running from summer 2008 to summer 2010, brought Interns from The Manchester College, Xaverian College, King David High School and Whalley Range Girls' School to organisations from a wide spectrum of business sectors. Their undoubted success - and the excellent work of their Mentors - is recognised by Sir Howard Bernstein at the annual Manchester Internships Celebration event held at Manchester Town Hall.

The future

Manchester Internships will be fully operational from September 2010 - and Internships are being held throughout the academic year 2010/11.

A testament to the benefits enjoyed by Interns and Mentors alike, the original sponsors have now been joined by more of Manchester's top employers to expand the number of placements offered - which is great news, as a growing number of school, academy and college students can now take part too.
